Dear Reader,
It would be nearly impossible to find any teenager who hasn't heard of, read, or seen the Harry Potter series by Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Like many teens, the books and movies of the Harry Potter series were a large part of my childhood. That is one of the reasons our group chose J.K. Rowling as our project's topic. After being turned down by several publishers she finally was able to get her book out to the masses. She is an inspiration because of her perseverance and strong will.
Before this project we knew that, because she was a woman, several publishers turned her down and said that she would never be a well known author. She eventually decided to adopt her grandmothers name, Kathleen, as a middle name and began to go to publishers with the name J.K. Rowling, the name associated with the books. She finally got the first book published and after revealing she was a woman and not really a man, sales skyrocketed.
Some of the research questions that we wanted answered, were what inspired her to write the Harry Potter series. We also wanted to answer what her motivation to become a writer was and how she came up with the idea for the series. Through these research questions, we essentially wanted to work out what values J.K. Rowling had, and was conveying in her works; using this knowledge, we could then discover what effect her values had upon my own personal values, and the values of a late twenty and an early twenty-first century society.
Some of the sources we used for this project were the books and movies themselves for information on the characters, as well as different websites to fill in any holes in the characters backgrounds. Additionally, we used websites like biography.com to find information about J.K. Rowling herself and about her career. Harry Potter fan sites were also helpful in finding information about the books, movies, characters, and Rowling herself. We also went to Wikipedia pages to find additional sources of information in their External Links section.
Through our research, we learned many things about JK Rowling's vision of morality conveyed through her works. In her books, JK Rowling comments on everything from the misery of depression - through the creatures of Dementors - and the societal issues caused by prejudice - through the concept of lycanthropy, shown more thoroughly by the plight of the character of Remus Lupin, as well as through the character of Rubeus Hagrid, a half-giant who fears discrimination so keeps his blood status private. We also learned about how JK Rowling used her series in order to educate a younger audience about the second world war, in an implicit way.
We hope you enjoy reading through our website. Along with our traditional research paper, we have included some creative artifacts in order to exemplify some of the social influences we have discussed in our paper as well as some factual information about the author and some direct references from the text. Read through our multigenre notes page in order to gain an explanation as to why we chose the artifacts we did for our project and to read through our thought process throughout the assignment. Finally, check our works cited page in order to find a list of our resources for the project.
Sincerely,
Jacob,
Subrina, and
Kaleb
